Here's a brief history of the San Leandro Unified School District and the period preceding its formation. (Click on pictures to see larger image).

Year School Details Picture
1856 Union Public School No. 1 Alameda County, at the site of the current Bancroft Middle School. Other buildings and sites followed in 1865, 1870, 1885 and 1889.
1909   San Leandro Elementary School District was set up.  
1910 Lincoln Elementary School Constructed.
1916 McKinley Elementary School Constructed
1916 Washington Elementary School Constructed
1920   Oakland took responsibility for the education of San Leandro students of high school age, consolidating the Oakland and San Leandro school districts.  
1927   Junior-Senior High School Constructed by consolidated district.  
1929 Roosevelt Elementary School Constructed
1949 Garfield School Became part of San Leandro.  
1952   San Leandro Unified School District (SLUSD) was formed. It operated eight K-6 elementary schools, one junior high (Bancroft) for grades 7-9, and one high school (San Leandro High) for grades 10-12.
1954 Madison Elementary School Opened (#9).  
1955 Monroe Elementary School Opened (#10).  
1955 Halcyon Elementary School Annexed (#11).  
1955 John Muir Junior High School Opened (Grades 8-9).  
1956 Hoover School Site purchased.  
1957 Jackson School Opened (K-4), (#12).  
1960 Pacific High School Opened.  
1964 Jackson Elementary School Closed.  
1965 Kennedy Elementary School Opened.  
1966 Lincoln Elementary School Closed.  
1966 Lincoln Continuation High School Opened.  
1973 Hoover Elementary School Site sold.  
1974 Lincoln High School Relocated to present site.  
1976 Halcyon Elementary School Closed.  
1977 Kennedy Elementary School Closed.  
1978   Administration offices at Lincoln School moved to a wing of Madison Elementary School, 14735 Juniper St.  
1978   Lincoln Elementary School Sold.  
1979   Reorganization established grades 7-8 at Bancroft and Muir, grades 9-12 at Pacific and San Leandro High, with nine elementary schools for grades K-6.  
1980   SLUSD also runs one adult school, one continuation high school, one children's care center and parent cooperative nursery.  
1981   SLUSD has a staff consisting of 300 certificated teachers, 30 administrators, 300 classified personnel. It's 1980-81 budget is $16,195,000. It's revenue limit per ADA (average daily attendance) is $1,873. Student population of 6,730. City of San Leandro population count is 63,410.
